The Executive Coaching Process
Executive coaching is a process by which a person works collaboratively with a
coach to set goals and build a plan to achieve a higher level of performance.
The process is designed to clarify obstacles and define actions which will help
the executive reach his or her potential.
Coaching can help remove obstacles and allow step changes in performance that
are difficult for an executive to achieve alone. Coaching will also accelerate
the time required to make change happen.
What is it for?
Typically executives use coaching at a time when they need to improve their
performance. This could be:
-
Promotion to new job
-
Taking on a new project
-
Being made redundant or losing your job
-
Deciding that now is the time for a new career direction
-
Unexpected or new challenges a work
-
Need to deal with underperformance of others at work
How does it work?
The initial coaching period is usually set at six weekly sessions. At the end of
this period the executive and the coach jointly decide whether further sessions
are required. Setting an initial limit of six weeks helps both executive and
coach focus on getting results.
The six week period covers the following steps:
1. Review and initial goal setting
2. Examination of the current situation (The ‘As Is’)
3. Design of the desired situation (the ‘To Be’)
4. Planning of actions to achieve goals
5. Initial implementation
6. Review against initial goals
There is not a direct correspondence of one step per week; often
it may be necessary to revisit earlier steps. The executive will be expected to
do work between sessions. The process works on both rational and emotional
dimensions, with particular emphasis on interpersonal issues.
